Announcing August Auditions for 2015-2016 Season

The Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO) is pleased to announce August auditions for the 2015-2016 season, to be held August 16 at the College of Charleston and the evening of Aug 30 at the Charleston County School of Arts. If you are not currently in the orchestra and would like to audition, please sign-up at: CSYOAugAuditions Come join the excitement and get the chance to perform with other motivated young musicians as well as the professional musicians of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra! Audition requirements are as follows: All Winds/Brass scales (any major scale up to 3 sharps/flats at least two octaves, three where possible), chromatic scale (as extensive as possible), two contrasting solos of your choice, sightreading Percussion: solo of your choice on snare drum, mallet instrument, or timpani AND snare drum – long roll, flam, paradiddle / xylophone – 2 octave major scales and arpeggios (C, F, Bb, Eb, G, and D) plus chromatic scale (2 octaves) / timpani – long roll (ppp to fff) / tune two drums to P4, P5, and Major 3rd All Strings: Two contrasting...

Members of the CSYO and GNOYO Together on June 23

Members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra will be joining the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra in a benefit concert on June 23, 7:00 pm at Memminger auditorium.  All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Mother Emmanuel Church. The concert will feature local prodigy Caleb Borick playing the Edward Grieg Piano Concerto, as well as music by Antonin Dvořák, New Orleans composer Mike Rihner and Haitian composer Férère Lueguerre. The GNOYO is led by Music Director Dr. Jean Montès, an accomplished conductor, musician, educator, clinician, lecturer, and performer. Dr. Montès passionately challenges and stimulates audiences and musicians alike and works with enthusiasm for music of all world cultures. The Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras have been recognized both locally and nationally for a strong commitment to music education. Now in its twentieth season, GNOYO provides young musicians from diverse backgrounds with the opportunity to participate in a high-quality full orchestra program. Side-by-Side Concert with the CSO, April 26, 6:00 p.m. at Memminger Auditorium

Please join us as the CSYO performs the first Side by Side Concert since our recent affiliation with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, April 26th at 6:00 pm in the Memminger Auditorium.  The combined forces of the two orchestras, numbering nearly 80 players, will perform Beethoven’s beloved Symphony no. 5 in C minor, conducted by CSYO Music Director, Jack Cleghorn. Also on the program are portions of two violin concertos; the 1st movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor featuring Nanako Shirai; and the 1st movement of Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1 featuring Benjamin Kremer.  Both Nanako and Benjamin are recent winners of this season’s CSYO Concerto Competition.  CSO Concertmaster Yuriy Bekker will be on the podium for the concertos, directing the CSO core musicians as they accompany the solo violinists. The Musicians

CSYO is open to instrumentalists in public, private, and home-school settings. CSYO musicians are generally in grades 7-12; however, younger students with exceptional talent and potential may be considered. Placement is based solely on skill level, not age or school grade.
